Species at Risk Act Public Information Sessions are being held across Canada to provide information on the Act, detail how this new law will affect Canadians and describe how Environment Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Parks Canada Agency intend to work with interested parties in implementing the new Act. Sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. In the Atlantic region, sessions will be held in St. John’s NF, Sept. 22 at the Fairmont Newfoundland, Salon B, 115 Cavendish Square; in Halifax, NS, Sept. 23 at the Four Points by Sheraton Halifax, Compass Room, 1496 Hollis Street; in Charlottetown, PEI, Sept. 24 at the Delta Prince Edward, Elfin & Pekeha Rooms, 18 Queen Street; and in Fredericton, NB Sept. 26 at the Lord Beaverbrook Hotel, St. John Room, 659 Queen Street. Ocean Life: The known, unknown and unknowable will be held Thursday, Oct. 23, 2 p.m. at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Washington, D.C. Two panels of distinguished speakers will address what is known about the biodiversity of marine life, what we may never know and how new technologies are redefining our search for the unknown. Hosted by the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and the Census of Marine Life, a global network of researchers in more than 45 nations engaged in a ten-year initiative to assess and explain the diversity, distribution and abundance of life in the oceans—past, present and future. Ballast Water Workshop is scheduled for Oct. 27 and 28 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The workshop is co-sponsored by Transport Canada and the MIT Sea Grant College Program. It will explore the feasibility of identifying areas along the Northwestern Atlantic that may be suitable for ballast water exchange for vessels traveling along the coast. The Ocean Management Research Network National Conference 2003 is scheduled for Nov. 13 and 14 in Ottawa, Ontario. The theme is Canada’s Oceans: Research, Management and the Human Dimension. Canada’s ocean and coastal researchers, managers and policy-makers will be gathering to hold discussions, share ideas and synthesize research results on the use and management of Canada’s three oceans. An addition to this year’s conference will be a set of interactive small group sessions to assess the state of knowledge, research gaps and priorities on human uses of Canada’s oceans and coasts. Ecological Monitoring and Assessment Network (EMAN): National Science Meeting 2003 is scheduled for Nov. 24 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The meeting will include plenary and concurrent sessions and various workshops including a community-monitoring workshop. A banquet will be held on the Nov. 27 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Kenneth C. Rowe Heritage Hall, Pier 21. Tickets are $28 (includes the banquet and transportation).

Assembling the Pieces: Restoration, Design & Landscape Ecology will be held Nov. 19 to 22 in Austin, Texas. The 15th Annual International Society for Ecological Restoration conference will focus on the design aspects of restoration, with the expectation of significant participation by landscape architecture, land planning, civil engineering and landscape ecology professionals.
