Monitoring and Evaluation
Historically, there has been little monitoring data collected on restoration
projects and inconsistencies in monitoring methods and data collection
have persisted. As a result, evaluation of projects based on goals and
objectives, and on ecological success, has been difficult. The need
to monitor restoration projects in a consistent manner and the need
to develop a central location for data storage has been identified repeatedly
by individuals and organizations throughout the Gulf of Maine. Monitoring,
whether it is used to evaluate and prioritize restoration opportunities
or to evaluate restoration projects, must be conducted to maximize utilization
of resources, learn from experience, and identify the most effective
techniques. Several evaluation and monitoring methods are described
in this report and a method recently implemented by the New Hampshire
Coastal Program is presented as a model for other organizations seeking
to implement consistent and economical monitoring programs.
