As a result of the stresses that are placed on the Gulf of Maine the US
Fish and Wildlife Service Gulf of Maine Coastal Estuary Program was
created. This resource gives the background of the Gulf of Maine which had
led to the need for such a program and outlines the goals of the Coastal
Estuary Program. The two main goals of the program are a public that
understands and values the Gulf of Maine and all its resources and acts to
promote it well being and effective interaction and collaboration of
agencies and officials. This resource also discusses the Program's
activties to help accomplish these goals. To accomplish these goals, the
Coastal Estuary Program is assessing living resources, identifying
threats, designing management strategies to counter threats, coordinating
and implementing strategies and developing techniques to increase
environmental awareness.
