In a speech delivered Tuesday, June 26, President Barack Obama announced new measure to reduce carbon pollution and greenhouse gas emissions produced in the United States.
Obama ordered an end to coal-fired power plants dumping unlimited carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere and approval of the TransCanada Corp tar sands oil pipeline project from Alberta to Texas only if it does not “significantly exacerbate” carbon pollution.
The announcement was the first-ever federal regulation of heat-trapping ases emitted by new and existing power plants. Forty percent of US carbon dioxide emissions, and one-third of greenhouse gases overall, are produced by electric power plants, according to the federal Energy Information Administration.
